Tour Plan
Arrival in the Sunlight City Lhasa (Lhasa Railway Station / Lhasa Gonggar Airport). Our guide or staff will greet you with a welcome sign and present you with a Hada (traditional Tibetan scarf). You will then be transferred to your hotel in the city center to check in and rest, allowing your body to acclimatize to the high altitude.
Warm Tips:
This day is crucial for travelers visiting Tibet for the first time. Lhasa is at an altitude of approximately 3,650 meters, with oxygen levels only about 65% of those in mainland China. Most visitors may experience some degree of altitude sickness. Apart from maintaining a calm and relaxed attitude, the best ways to prevent altitude sickness are to avoid strenuous exercise, drink plenty of water, eat fruits, and get adequate rest. If you feel unwell, please contact your guide promptly to arrange for medical treatment.
On the first night after arriving in Lhasa, please refrain from washing your hair or taking a bath to prevent catching a cold. The temperature difference between day and night in Lhasa is significant, so please dress warmly to avoid triggering altitude sickness.
Many hotels in Tibet use solar water heaters. Occasionally, the hot water supply might not be consistently hot. We appreciate your understanding.
Accommodation conditions in Tibet are limited and may differ from hotels of the same standard in mainland China. Please be mentally prepared.
In the early morning, head to the Potala Palace, ascending the zigzag path to the summit of Red Mountain. Walk through the White Palace and Red Palace, exploring the stupas of successive Dalai Lamas and the Treasure Gallery, while overlooking the panoramic view of the Lhasa River valley. In the afternoon, step into the Jokhang Temple to pay homage to the life-sized statue of the twelve-year-old Sakyamuni Buddha and admire the golden roofs of Tibetan architecture and the Tang Dynasty wooden carvings. Then, take a stroll along the Barkhor Street kora circuit, walking clockwise amidst the stream of pilgrims. Pause at the Makye Ame teahouse to immerse yourself in the pulse of millennia-old faith in this holy city.
Depart early in the morning along National Highway G318, crossing the Gamba Pass (4,990m) for a panoramic view of Yamdrok Lake's turquoise waters, meandering like a silk ribbon. Continue towards Gyantse, approaching the majestic Karola Glacier to witness its immense ice tongue and feel the biting wind. Pass by Manla Reservoir, where the plateau's emerald waters mirror the surrounding mountains. Arrive in Gyantse in the afternoon to explore the Pelkor Chode Monastery's Kumbum Stupa, a masterpiece blending Tibetan, Chinese, and Nepalese artistic traditions. Reach Shigatse (3,800m) by evening, completing an approximately 7-hour, 340-kilometer journey showcasing sacred lakes, glaciers, and ancient monasteries.
Visit the Panchen Lama's seat, Tashilhunpo Monastery, in the morning light, paying homage to the giant Maitreya Buddha statue and the stupas, experiencing the solemnity of Tibetan Buddhism. Then drive along National Highway G318, turning onto the Everest Highway, crossing Gyatsola Pass (5,200m) for a distant view of four continuous 8,000-meter peaks. Continue ascending to Gawula Pass (5,200m), appreciating the magnificent panorama of the Everest range from the viewing platform and the breathtaking "108 bends" sky road. Arrive at Rongbuk Monastery (4,980m) in the afternoon, the highest-altitude monastery in the world, quietly awaiting the sacred spectacle of the sunlit golden mountain. Transfer to an eco-friendly vehicle to reach Everest Base Camp (5,200m) directly. Stand before the 8,848.86-meter monument, gazing up at the roof of the world as it transforms into brilliant gold under the evening sun. Overnight at a guesthouse in Basong Village, where the starry Milky Way feels almost within reach. This approximately 350km, 7-hour journey offers both physical challenge and spiritual cleansing.
Bidding farewell to Everest at dawn, head south into the Shishapangma Conservation Area. Gaze into the distance at Shishapangma (8,027m), the sole 8,000-meter peak entirely within China, its silver pyramid dominating the horizon. Pass by Peiku Tso (4,590m), its azure jewel-like waters reflecting the snowy peaks, offering close-up views of plateau ecology along the lakeshore.
Continue crossing several passes above 5,000 meters, entering the pastures of Zhongba County, where Tibetan wild donkeys and black-necked cranes occasionally appear. Arrive in Saga County (4,500m) by evening, a vital gateway on the southern route to Ngari.
Depart in the morning and head to Tarchen, the "center of the universe," entering the Ngari highlands along the way. First, arrive at Lake Manasarovar, foremost among Tibet's three holy lakes. Its azure waters reflect the snow-capped mountains, regarded by Buddhists as the amrita (nectar) bestowed upon the world by Chakrasamvara. Then, gaze into the distance at the pyramid-like peak of the sacred Mount Kailash, feeling its sanctity and solemnity. At sunset, wait at the best viewing platform for the breathtaking spectacle of the "golden sunset glow" on Naimona'nyi Peak, as the setting sun dyes the snow-capped peak into brilliant gold and red, a scene of unparalleled magnificence. Overnight in Tarchen, preparing for tomorrow's kora (pilgrimage circuit) or further exploration into Ngari.
Depart from Tarchen (4,675m) at 6:00 am, heading west along the Lha Chu Valley in the early morning twilight. The initial section is relatively gentle, passing through areas with colorful prayer flags and mani stones carved with the six-syllable mantra. Tibetan pilgrims prostrating themselves at every step create a solemn and sacred atmosphere. After trekking about 8km over 4 hours, arrive at Chugu Monastery (4,860m) by 10:00 am. Built against the mountain, it's a good spot to take a break, replenish with some hot food, and capture the majestic pyramid-shaped north face of Mount Kailash. The trail becomes steeper in the afternoon, winding along the mountainside, crossing alpine shrubs and scree slopes, with occasional sightings of Tibetan wild donkeys, plateau hares, and marmots. As the air gets thinner, adjust your pace to avoid triggering altitude sickness from strenuous activity. Arrive at Drira Monastery (5,080m) before 5:00 pm. The guesthouse here directly faces the west face of Mount Kailash, offering the best views of the sacred mountain along the entire trek. At sunset, the pyramid peak is dyed a magnificent gold-red. Overnight in simple shared dormitories (bring your own sleeping bag recommended), conserving energy for the challenging crossing of the 5,630m Dolma La Pass early the next morning.
Departing in the dark at 4:00 am, headlamps illuminating the winding mountain path, a strenuous 3-hour climb brings you to Dolma La Pass (5,630m). Amidst the fluttering prayer flags, gaze down upon the turquoise waters of Tokche Tso — this is the trek's highest point and its spiritual heart. Then, a steep and cautious descent over rugged scree fields begins. In the afternoon, follow the gentler valley trail, passing the secluded Zutulphuk Monastery, finally arriving at your destination, Zutulphuk Monastery (4,800m). Legs are weary, but the mind feels clear. Overnight at the guesthouse near the monastery, with the kora nearing its圆满 completion.
Depart from Zutulphuk Monastery in the early morning with light gear, descending gently along the river valley for 3 hours back to Tarchen, successfully completing the 54km kora (pilgrimage circuit). In the afternoon, drive to explore the Donggar and Piyang Cave Temple Sites. This 11th-century treasure from the Guge Kingdom features Tibet's most complete cave complex, with vibrant thousand-year-old murals and exquisite apsaras and mandalas. Arrive in Zanda (3,700m) before dusk and stay overnight in the county town, conserving energy for tomorrow's exploration of the Guge Kingdom ruins and the magnificent earth forest.
Depart from Zanda County in the early morning, with the first stop at the magnificent Guge Kingdom ruins. Climb the steps to the summit, overlooking the layout of former royal palaces, monasteries, and watchtowers amidst the ruins, imagining the glory and mysterious disappearance of this ancient plateau kingdom a millennium ago. Visit the Red Temple and White Temple, adorned with exquisite murals. Then drive to Tholing Monastery, the first monastery of the Later Diffusion of Tibetan Buddhism, founded by Yeshe-Ö. Appreciate its architecture blending Indian and Nepalese styles, along with ancient statues. In the afternoon, venture deep into the Zanda Earth Forest National Geopark, traversing the sprawling earth forest communities stretching for dozens of kilometers. Observe the layered landscapes sculpted by rain and wind erosion, resembling palaces or pagoda groves, majestic in scale. Arrive at Xiayi Valley by evening. Here, the earth forest displays vibrant layers of red, yellow, orange, and white. Bathed in the sunset's afterglow, the interplay of light and shadow creates a dazzling spectacle. Finally, drive approximately six hours back to Shiquanhe, concluding this unforgettable essence tour of the Southern Ngari route in a single day.

Proceed to Darbu Co, feeling the boundless grandeur of the uninhabited areas of northern Tibet. Then visit Pudang Co and Xiaka Co, where the lake surfaces glisten under the setting sun, and wildlife occasionally appears along the shores. Drive to Nyima County town in the evening, concluding this essence tour of the central northern Tibetan route in one day.
Depart from Nyima in the morning, embarking on a magnificent journey through the northern Tibetan plateau, where "one lake after another" unfolds like a string of gems. The first stop is Taze Co, with its vast lake surface, waterfowl soaring in flocks, and distant mountains silhouetted against the sky. Continue to Wuru Co, its waters a beautiful sapphire blue, with melodious pastoral songs drifting across the lakeside grasslands. In the afternoon, pass by Chagyoi Co, observing the ecological tapestry woven by highland salt lakes and wetlands. Then proceed to Co Ngoin, with its numerous scattered islands where brown-headed gulls breed and inhabit, teeming with life. Next, arrive at Siling Co, Tibet's largest lake. Its waters stretch boundlessly into the horizon, appearing as vast and magnificent as an ocean from a distance, with wildlife roaming freely along its shores. Drive to Baingoin County town in the evening, concluding this unforgettable tour of the plateau's stunning lakes.
Depart from Baingoin in the early morning, first heading to Bam Co, where the lake is as clear as a mirror, reflecting the snowy mountains, with vast and tranquil pastures nearby. Continue to the north shore of the holy lake Namtso, exploring the hidden gem, Holy Elephant Gate (Tashi Dor). Hike to the Crescent Moon Bay viewing platform, overlooking the perfect arc formed by the lake surrounding the peninsula. On the opposite shore, the sacred Elephant Rock rises abruptly from the ground, shaped like an elephant drinking water, a spectacle of extraordinary grandeur. Gaze into the distance at the snow-capped main peak of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains, which complement the azure lake waters beautifully. In the afternoon, stroll along the lakeshore, feeling the vastness and sanctity of the heavenly lake. Pass through Damxung in the evening and drive back to Lhasa, concluding this unforgettable journey from the northern Tibetan plateau to the holy city.
