Tour Plan
Your journey to the heart of Central Asia begins as you travel from your departure city to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Upon your arrival at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, your local guide or driver will greet you, holding a sign to offer a warm welcome. You will then be transferred to your hotel in the city center for check-in. The remainder of the day is free for you to rest and begin acclimating to your new surroundings at your own pace.
Warm Tips
Altitude: ~800m. No sickness risk, but dry air, strong UV, big day-night temp swings.
Day 1: Take it easy. Rest, hydrate (dry climate increases fluid loss), avoid strenuous activity.
Shower: Skip first night to help body adjust.
Dress: Layers best for changing temps (warm days, cool evenings).
Sun: UV intense even on cloudy days—sunscreen, sunglasses recommended.
Hot water: Solar heating may fluctuate—please understand.
Hotel: Modern comfort, local character. May differ from eastern cities. Gateway to Silk Road cultures.
In the morning, you will depart from Urumqi and journey eastward towards the breathtaking Tianshan Tianchi (Heavenly Lake), one of Xinjiang's most iconic natural wonders. The drive takes you through the outskirts of the city and into the foothills of the majestic Tianshan Mountains, with the landscape gradually transforming from urban sprawl to rolling grasslands and finally to dense pine forests as you ascend. Upon arrival at the Tianchi Scenic Area, you will board an eco-friendly shuttle bus that winds its way up the mountain, offering glimpses of the sparkling lake through the trees and occasional vistas of the surrounding peaks.
Emerging from the forest, you will be greeted by the spectacular sight of Tianchi itself—a pristine alpine lake nestled at an elevation of approximately 1,980 meters, surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, verdant forests, and lush subalpine meadows. The lake's crystal-clear waters, fed by glacial melt, reflect the surrounding mountains like a perfect mirror, creating a scene of serene and majestic beauty that has inspired poets and artists for centuries. According to legend, this was the favored bathing place of the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens in ancient Chinese mythology, adding an element of mystique to the already enchanting atmosphere.
You will have ample time to explore the lake's perimeter via the wooden boardwalks and pathways that hug the shoreline. Stroll at your own pace, breathing in the crisp, pine-scented air and stopping frequently to absorb the panoramic views and capture photographs. The iconic snow-capped peak of Bogda Feng (Mount Bogda), rising to 5,445 meters, dominates the skyline to the east, its glaciers gleaming white against the deep blue sky. For those seeking a closer encounter with the lake, optional boat rides are available that take you out onto the water, offering unique perspectives of the surrounding peaks and forests reflected in the mirror-like surface.
If time and energy permit, you may choose to venture along one of the shorter hiking trails that lead to viewpoints overlooking the lake or to smaller, secluded tarns hidden among the pines. The area is also home to traditional Kazakh herder families, and you may see their yurts dotting the meadows and their horses and sheep grazing on the lush slopes—a reminder of the timeless connection between people and this magnificent landscape.
In the afternoon, you will descend from the mountain and begin your journey back to Urumqi, carrying with you the tranquil beauty of Tianchi. Upon arrival in the capital, you will check into your hotel and have the evening free to relax, explore the city, or enjoy a final taste of Xinjiang's diverse culinary offerings.

In the morning, you will depart from Urumqi or Changji and embark on a journey along the newly constructed S21 Desert Highway, a modern engineering marvel that traverses the vast Gurbantünggüt Desert, the second-largest desert in China. This remarkable route offers a unique perspective on the northern Xinjiang landscape, taking you through endless waves of sand dunes, hardy desert vegetation, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife adapted to this harsh yet beautiful environment. As you travel, you'll witness the subtle beauty of the desert—the shifting patterns of sand sculpted by the wind, the resilient desert plants dotting the landscape, and the immense sky stretching endlessly in all directions.
Along the journey, you will pass by the magnificent Ulungur Lake (also known as Wulungu Lake), one of the largest freshwater lakes in northern Xinjiang, nestled on the edge of the desert like a sparkling blue gem. This vast body of water creates a striking contrast against the surrounding golden sands, offering a refreshing visual respite and an opportunity to appreciate nature's diversity. You will have time to stretch your legs near the lake, breathe in the fresh air, and capture the beautiful scenery of desert meeting water—a truly unique landscape that photographers will treasure. The lake is also an important habitat for migratory birds, and depending on the season, you may observe various waterfowl along its shores.
Continuing northward, the landscape gradually transforms from desert to the lush grasslands and rolling hills that characterize the Altay region. As evening approaches, you will arrive in either Beitun, a small city with a relaxed atmosphere, or Burqin, a charming county town known as the gateway to the breathtaking Kanas and Hemu scenic areas. You will have the opportunity to descend into a section of the channels and marvel at the engineering prowess of the ancient Uyghur people. Continuing your journey, you will encounter the legendary Flame Mountain, made famous by the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West." Its barren, reddish-brown ridges stretch across the landscape like dancing flames, particularly striking under the intense Turpan sun. You will make a brief stop to feel the heat radiating from its slopes and capture the surreal scenery. Next, you will visit the lush and verdant Grape Valley, a hidden paradise nestled deep within the otherwise arid mountains. Here, shaded by extensive trellises heavy with ripening grapes, you can stroll through the cool oasis, sample some of the region's famous seedless white grapes, and experience the refreshing contrast to the surrounding desert. After immersing yourself in the sweet flavors and cool shade of the valley, you will depart Turpan and journey back to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. As you travel, the landscape gradually transitions from the unique depression of Turpan to the more familiar surroundings of this modern city.
